24th Young Leaders Conference 2008 in Torino: The War for talent [7. Okt, 21:57]
Last week I spent almost three amazing days in Torino / Italy. Preselected by the US Embassy in Vienna I have been invited by The Council for the United States and Italy to an international Conference called the Young Leaders Conference.

The Council has been founded by the Tycoons David Rockefeller and Gianni Agnelli 25 years ago with the intention to strengthen the relationship between Italy and the United States of America:

"For your background, the Council is a bi-national, non-profit organization. It was established in 1983 to promote interchange and understanding between the business leaderships of the two countries. The American Chairman is David Heleniak, Vice Chairman of Morgan Stanley; his Italian counterpart is Marco Tronchetti Provera, Chairman of Pirelli."

Each year the Council organises conferences:

"These conferences bring together young people under 40 years of age (typically in their 30s) from all sectors – academia, business, government, media, nonprofit/nongovernmental – who have demonstrated a record of accomplishment, leadership qualities and potential for growth in their respective fields of activity to discuss a subject of common interest. The objective is to enable the participants to gain new perspectives on issues of relevance for the future and to develop new international connections and friendships. The participants will number between 40 and 50, equally divided among the United States, Italy, and a group of other countries in Europe and elsewhere."

This year the topic of interest was The war for talent:

“The War for Talent” will examine the transformation of the workplace. Employers at all levels, from governments and non-governmental organizations to the private sector, seek talented employees in a rapidly-changing world subject to the consequences of the IT revolution, globalization, and other factors. Employers compete actively for both talented and menial staff. They do it locally and globally, shedding and acquiring.

We had a pretty tight schedule, starting every morning at 08:00 a.m. never getting back to the hotel before 11:00 p.m. Then most of started to work on the most important issues of their jobs! I think I was the only one without blackberry, thus sometimes feeling like an alien ;-)

On our first day we worked in group discussion sessions our way through the agenda covering issues like as:

WHO AND WHAT? - THE NEW GLOBAL LANDSCAPE
What makes a talent? Is a talent a) born or b) made?

DEMOGRAPHY AND PRODUCTIVITY
Migration: large areas of the globe are threatened with depopulation – while others are suffering from over population. What can be done to prepare for these challenges?

TALENT MANAGEMENT
The laws of supply and demand apply in the labor market. “Talent strategy” - CEOs have been stressing the importance of this concept, but what does “talent strategy” mean, and how is it developed?

We had vivid discussions and I had insight in the individual perspectives of almost 40 young people with extensive practical experience.

The only thing I think we missed to focus on enough were the challenges of how to deal with Generation Y. The young talents of the future are part of that generation and from my perspective these people (at least in central europe) are the dawn of the post-materialistic society. And that does not fit with shareholder oriented from quarter to quarter looking corporations.

But we will see - great news is, that the group from Torino can now stay in touch and foster its network by using Web 2.0 Plattforms like as Facebook.

Looking forward to see you again, and thanx for the fish ;-)
